Psalm 70:5
But I am poor and needy; Make haste to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay.”
This is a short Psalm in which David gets right to the point as he is praying and calling upon the Lord.  I was reading a publication on prayer which was over one hundred years old, the writer gave the challenge, “who are we praying to?”  He mentioned that people sometimes pray these long prayers, really giving a message to those in the meeting, no real request given to the Lord.  Sometimes a person gives a long theological message as though they are reminding the Lord, he concluded how silly that is.  But to pray to the Lord, to be clear and direct, making our need known, and doing so by faith.  They said of George Mueller, that he prayed like a child, so simple, and yet amazing in power and effectiveness, there is something here for us.
There in only one way to approach the Lord, and that is being honest about our condition, we are all “poor and needy”.  Sinners we are, in need of a Savior, and only in humility will we touch the Lord and experience His life.  Pride will keep us from the Lord, and it will destroy us spiritually.  We need the Lord’s touch, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit.  We need to be changed and transformed, and only Jesus can do that work.  And He can, and He wants to, for the honest and sincere soul.
“Make haste” the Lord will, the only place we see where God is in a hurry is to bring the son home in the Prodigal son.  The Lord runs out to meet the sinner, filled with mercy, grace and love!  But there is only one way the son can come home, “poor and needy”.  The Lord loves all people, and His heart is always to save and to rescue.  This is where our prayers and intercession are so important, it says that the son, who was in the pigpen, “came to himself”.  The light went on, all of a sudden he was awakened, and saw the Truth, and KNEW that he had to get back to Father’s House.  People who are lost and being swept away, in utter darkness, need to be awakened, and we can’t do it, but the Lord can, and our prayers are key in binding the strong man.
The Lord is a Deliverer, the only Deliverer there is, He came “for this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might DESTROY the works of the devil”.  That is Who Jesus is and what Jesus does, and He uses His people in this great commission, to shine His Bright Light into the darkness of this lost world!  That He might bring Deliverance to those who are lost, perishing, and in bondage, Jesus came to set the captive free!
